Albert Eistein : The Eminent Physicist of the 2oth century.
The brilliant physicist named Albert Einstein is one of the greatest scientists of 20th century. His fame has spread all over the world. He is best known as the creator of the theory of relativity which led to new ways of thinking about time, space, matter, energy and gravity. Einstein made many contributions which now benefit the development of science and technology.
Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, on march 14, 1879, to Jewish parents. He spent his childhood in Munich, where he began his schooling and showed an interest in science and mathematics. He was a quiet, patient and curious child. At the age of five, Einstein received a pocket compass from his father. He was interested in the mysterious behavior of the compass needle that kept pointing in the same direction no matter which way the compass was turned. This became one of inspirations in his life.
After finishing high school in Aarau, Switzerland, Einstein entered the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1896 to be trained as a teacher in physics and mathematics. In 1900, he gained his diploma and acquired Swiss citizenship in 1901. He earned a doctorate at the same institute and his four research papers on the photoelectric effect, relativity and the movement of molecules were published in the same year. From 1902 to 1909,Einstein worked as an examiner at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, Switzerland. This job allowed him a lot of free time, which he spent in scientific investigation. In 1914, he was appointed as Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and a professor at the university of Berlin.
Worldwide fame came to Einstein in 1919 when the Royal Society of London announced that predictions made in his general theory of relativity had been confirmed. Besides, he contributed to statistical mechanics by his development of the quantum theory. He also accomplished valuable work relating to relativistic cosmology. In 1933, Einstein renounced his citizenship of Germany for political reasons and immigrated to America to take a position as a professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton.
Furthermore, Einstein was involved in world politics in 1939. Before World War II, he learned from Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist that German physicist had discovered the fission of uranium. Fermi was aware of the fact that the fission of uranium could release enormous quantities of energy. Therefore, Einstein wrote to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to warn him that this scientific knowledge could result in Germany’s development of the atomic bomb. Einstein’s letter led to the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. He became a citizen of the USA in 1940 and retired from his position in 1945.
Einstein was a member of many leading scientific academies throughout the world and received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine and philosophy from many European and American universities, In addition, he gained numerous awards in recognition for his work such as the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921, the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1925 and the Franklin medal of the Franklin Institute in 1935. In 1999, he was also named Person of the Century by TIME magazine.
Albert Einstein passed away on April 18, 1955 due to heart failure. Einstein in praised as the world’s top physicist who greatly influences science today. His creations have offered humans considerable advantages. For example, the theory of relativity he proposed led to the construction of the atomic bomb which can be used to generate electrical current. He is also an inspiration to new-blood scientists to produce works which can result in scientific advancement in the future.
